Live music is one of the things guests remember most about a wedding – and one of the first questions couples ask us is simply: how much does a wedding band cost? Here’s an honest guide to UK prices in 2026, what drives them, and how to get the most from your budget.
The short answer
Most couples in the UK pay somewhere between £1,000 and £3,000 for a professional wedding band for the evening reception. Smaller acoustic acts can come in under £1,000, while large showbands, celebrity line-ups or bands travelling a long way can be well above £3,000.
For context, Bridebook’s 2026 UK Wedding Report puts the average total spend on wedding music (ceremony and reception combined) at just under £2,000, within an overall average wedding budget of around £20,600.
Typical wedding band prices by type
These are typical market ranges for a Saturday evening reception. Every act and date is different, so treat them as a starting point rather than a price list.
- Acoustic duo or trio – roughly £600–£1,200. Perfect for the ceremony, drinks reception or a relaxed evening.
- Four-piece function band – roughly £1,200–£2,000. The classic wedding band: vocals, guitar, bass and drums.
- Five to six-piece band – roughly £1,800–£3,000. Adds keys, sax or extra vocals for a bigger sound.
- Soul, Motown or horn-section bands – roughly £2,000–£4,000+. Big, brassy dance floor fillers.
- Tribute and themed bands – roughly £900–£3,000+, depending on the act and line-up.
- Celebrity and famous-name bands – priced individually and usually several thousand pounds upwards.
What affects the price?
1. The number of musicians
This is the biggest factor. Each extra player adds their fee, travel and time, so a seven-piece will always cost more than a four-piece.
2. Date and time of year
Saturdays from May to September are the busiest dates of the year. Fridays, Sundays, midweek and winter weddings often give you more choice and better value.
3. Location and travel
Bands generally include a certain amount of travel. If your venue is a long way from them – or in a remote spot – expect travel or accommodation costs to be added.
4. Performance time and extras
The standard package is usually two 60-minute sets or three 40-minute sets, plus a DJ playlist between sets. Extras such as an acoustic ceremony set, learning your first-dance song, an early arrival or extra lighting will add to the cost.
5. Experience and reputation
Seasoned wedding bands know how to read a room, keep to a venue’s schedule and fill a dance floor. That reliability is worth paying for.
What’s usually included?
A professional wedding band quote should normally cover:
- Live sets for the evening (typically two to three hours of music in total)
- Their own PA system and basic stage lighting
- A playlist or DJ service between sets
- A first-dance song (from their repertoire, or learnt specially for an extra fee)
- Public liability insurance and PAT-tested equipment – most venues insist on both
Always check whether food for the band, parking and any venue sound limiters have been discussed – these small details make for a smooth night.
How to get the best value
- Book early. The best bands for peak summer Saturdays are often booked 12–18 months ahead.
- Be flexible on the line-up. A tight four-piece can fill a dance floor just as well as a much bigger band.
- Consider an off-peak date. Friday, Sunday and winter weddings can open up acts that would otherwise be beyond budget.
- Use one agency for everything. Booking your band, DJ and ceremony musicians together keeps timings joined up and saves you chasing several suppliers.
- Tell your agent your real budget. It’s the quickest way to get recommendations that genuinely fit.
Band or DJ?
If budget is tight, a great wedding DJ typically costs less than a band and can play any song you like. Many couples choose a band for the main event and let the DJ take over afterwards. We’ve written a separate guide on choosing between a band, a DJ or both.

Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should I book a wedding band?
For a summer Saturday, 12–18 months ahead is ideal. Off-peak dates can often be booked with less notice, but popular bands still go quickly.
Do wedding bands need a deposit?
Yes – a deposit is normally paid to secure the date, with the balance due before the wedding. Your booking agreement will set out the terms.
How long does a wedding band play for?
Usually two hours of live music in total, split into two or three sets, with a playlist or DJ service in between.
Can the band learn our first dance?
Most bands are happy to learn a special first-dance song, usually for a small additional fee. Give them plenty of notice.
